The symptom of the problem

Since October 2, a number of the world’s Catholic bishops have been gathered in a Synod of Bishops at the Vatican. They are discussing a variety of proposals for running the church – one being how to resolve the “priest shortage problem”. As one of the major issues for discussion, a solution for the priest shortage solution would be vital to the church’s future success.

Let’s not hold our breath.

Not only have they disregarded the fact that continuing to enforce celibacy on the priesthood may contribute to the problem, they have stated “the shortage of priests is a symptom of the problem…the real problem is the crisis of faith.”

Excuse me, but, why are we again blaming the faithful?

The only problems “of faith” being faced by the Catholic Church are those it created. Maybe the priest sex scandals, the scandal cover-ups, the knowing complicity in abuse of children – our children, the hundreds of millions paid out to settle lawsuits, the continuing targeting of gay priests and members, the refusal of the church to change and modernize, the refusal to allow women to become priests ….

Need we go on?
