Torture admissions
Originally leaving to kick some butt in Europe, Condi is not being treated as regally as she expected. The Europeans are rightly upset at US deceptions and she's being forced to admit changes in American policies thereby effectively admitting our use of torture as American policy.
Announcing a new legal interpretation of an international treaty, Rice said “As a matter of U.S. policy, the United States' obligations under the CAT (Convention against Torture), which prohibits cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment -- those obligations extend to U.S. personnel wherever they are, whether they are in the United States or outside of the United States.”
Amnesty International believes Rice's remarks were not a concession and will still press for action on reports of abuse at US military bases. They will continue to monitor the administration in a prudent trust but verify mode.
The pitifully sad thing about this whole shameful situation is it happened in the "land of the free and the brave." What have we become?
