Casual Christians

Preaching from the pulpit just isn't what is used to be.

Long, long ago – before the Christian mega-churches came to be, if Christmas fell on a Sunday, that lucky occurrence was viewed as a very wonderful chance to celebrate Christ's birth on his designated birthday. It was special - it created wonderful memories and powerful opportunities for personal reflection.

Well, things have changed. The big mega-churches, our society's current examples gross religious excess are also revealing another aspect of their characters. Many of the churches are canceling their Sunday services – anticipating low attendances on a “family day.”

The closures stand in stark contrast to Roman Catholic parishes, which will see some of their largest crowds of the year on Christmas, and mainline Protestant congregations such as the Episcopal, Methodist and Lutheran churches, where Sunday services are rarely if ever canceled.”

Does this mean the big Christian churches are just the plastic and phony entertainment mega-complexes they appear to be, existing to create wealth and not to spread the word?

It seems so.
