New York Times – worse everyday
The refusal of executive editor Bill Keller and publisher Arthur Sulzberger to answer NYT public editor Byron Calame's questions regarding the reasons for sitting on the story, is an attempt to avoid, delay, and obfuscate in a vain hope the controversy will just fade away. They will soon start to spin the story, thereby cementing their fall from grace.
By their more than one year long collusion with an administration conducting secret monitoring of the America's electronic communications, the NYT has shown itself to be unworthy of being called a newspaper. Their actions are not one of a fourth estate member, rather they are akin to those of a compliant stooge. Not appearing to have any ability or inclination to ask questions or do investigative reporting, the Times seems to be totally abrogating it's responsibilities to their readers and our nation.
Their complicity in keeping the story quiet may also have influenced the 2004 election – and they may have helped the Bushies listen in on their political oppositions' conversations along the way. Since they are not denying possession of the story before the election, a deafening silence confirms the timing.
Is anyone there responsible for anything?
