...but the fact remains that the USA voted for him - twice - i.e. at least half the country stands by his principles

Unfortunately, thats true. But remember only 60% of the eligible voting population participated in the election. Hopefully more people will turn out in the next election cycle and show what a higher portion of America thinks.
